Because all of these jobs were part time and many of them depended on tips, my earnings were still really sporadic. I would have a good week – followed by a really lousy week. So the thing was that I was still broke, completely miserable, and way too busy to focus much energy (if any) on being an actor. I started to feel like when I was able to get auditions, I was going to them with a really desperate energy of NEEDING to get the job – not so much for the creative side – but just for the money I would earn. There’s no question but that that affected my performances and I’m sure kept me from booking roles.

So I made the decision that I was going to learn about money. I knew there were people out there who handled their finances in a way that actually gave them the freedom to do the things they wanted to be doing. I basically figured that if others could do it then so could I. I didn’t want to believe that choosing to be an artist meant that until I got my “big break” I was going to have to be poor and struggling. And, I was actually starting to realize that being poor and struggling was more likely to keep me from EVER getting that big break.

I started reading every financial book I could get my hands on. I took every free and low cost financial course I could find.
